These are the popular design styles based on age and generation

Are you a Gen X, Y, or Z? Are we guessing your design tastes and styles right?

Our building designers deal with clients every day. Each one of them has a distinct taste when it comes to the look of their homes. Their preferences also change as they grow old. The young Aussie’s design styles are far different from what their parents would want to live in.

Let’s take a look at the popular interior design styles that appeal to each generation:

Designs for the Generation X or Baby Boomers

If your client is born from 1946 to 1964, he or she will adore a blend of traditional and rustic style in their humble abode. They want a family-friendly home—someplace that is warm, comfy, and elegant.

This design style celebrates the beauty of timber. It’s on the ceiling, floors, and furniture pieces. Decor the pillows, bed, and couches with soft and muted fabrics and linens. Hang vintage chandeliers or pendant lights.

Designs for the Generation Y or Millennials

The people who are born from 1980 to 1995 or the millennials are attracted to modern and minimal interiors. They prefer the cleanliness of mid-century or Nordic designs and it is easy to see why.

Millennials prefer to live in a big city. According to a Nielsen study, living in urban spaces is convenient for their social lifestyle. It is near shops, restaurants, schools, and offices.

The downside? Most urban dwellers do not live largely. There is an increasing number of people who reside in high-rise apartments and condo units. We’ve seen 50sqm units in Melbourne CBD, and some Aussies might live in smaller units.

In that case, minimalist and mid-century modern designed spaces are the best option. Here, the designers create an open space with light and sleek pieces of furniture. Instead of a boxy, the chairs and tables have legs. This makes the interiors airy and breathable for the occupant.

Millennials also like the neutral scheme of this design style. A lot of them keep their walls white, wooden floors, and play safe furniture (cream, beige, grey, brown, or white pieces only). They still want colours, but only to accentuate the space. It can be an artwork or a fabric used as pillow case or rug.

For them, design something functional, comfortable, organised, but never boring.

Designs for Generation Z

These peeps are born next to millennials but they seem to be in cahoots with the baby boomers. They like the classics but with a modern twist to it—something eclectic.

If their space has classic architectural elements, preserve it. Feel free mix and match the classic elements with other design styles. Go bold. Just be careful not to get crazy and find the balance of everything in the interiors.
